Why a visit to Chichén Itzá is an Experience You won’t forget

There are places in the world that you need to visit, if you want to understand where we come from. After all, it is the only way to plan the future. Sometimes, it brings you majestic (like the pharaohs of Egypt and their pyramids), hurt and pain (when you walk the path of those that died in Auschwitz) and mystery and marvel, which is what you will find in Chichén Itzá.

You get to enjoy the Sun, Great Beaches and the Warm Welcome of Mexicans

To visit Chichén Itzá, you need to head to Cancún, in Mexico. It is located on the Yucatán Peninsula, that is warmed by the water of the Gulf of Mexico. Once you have dropped your luggage at a hotel in Cancún, you will get to enjoy the easy life, for as long as you will stay there. Mexico is very different, from one part to another. This region is highly touristic and westernized, which guarantees you to benefit from all the comfort you may expect from a vacation under the sun. Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of adventures, when you will head to Chichén Itzá, later on.

The Pleasure of getting to Chichén Itzá

Taking a bus tour to Chichén Itzá, is really the ideal way, if you want to feel part of Mexico. It will take you through forests, and you’ll get to see houses almost completely empty, where people live with practically nothing. However, most of them own a tiny and bony dog, as well as a chicken. It will really bring you back to the basis of life, far away from the comfort of the hotel. It prepares you for what is to come next, which is the ancient Mayan city of Chichén Itzá.

An Overwhelming Feeling – as if the Past Never Left

You may visit other pyramids in Mexico (and you should), but you will never walk through a site like Chichén Itzá, anywhere else, in this country. In fact, very few sites in the world have managed to retain the life that was, back when the city was alive. This translates into many different sentiments, as you walk through it, depending on your capacity of attachment to what surrounds you. However, when you get to the abyss, where they dropped human sacrifices alive, from the top of the hill, it is almost impossible that you won’t shiver from the memory of the dead that still live there, no matter who you are.

Other Times – Other Beliefs

Walking through such important archeological sites, you get to go back in time, to understand what they valued; what their beliefs were. In Chichén Itzá, you will be surprised. When you get to their ball game court, you will need to listen very closely to the tour guide. He or she will explain to you how this game was played, on this 120 m long and 30 m wide field. But most importantly he or she will teach you the most important rule of the game: the winners will be sacrificed to the Gods. Yes, the winners – not the losers. We have changed a lot, haven’t we?

While touring the sport court, find the little character that has been carved on the rock, which wears a bubble around its head, just like an astronaut would. It is speaking to the Mayans. When you leave, you will wonder if travel through time is possible, as this little guy looks as if he came from space, or maybe extra-terrestrials came on earth, back then.

There is so much more that you will discover there, starting with the Temple of Kukulkan, considered a wonder of the world. A while ago, you still climb inside it. Not anymore, though. It may be best, as it was enough to give you a heart attack, if you were just a little claustrophobic.
