Chamber Business of the Month

American Legion & Auxillary
November, 2016
On any given day, if you go to downtown Plattsburg behind the Community Courtyard and look in the building at 110 W Locust Street, you might find some veterans enjoying each other’s company at the headquarters of American Legion John Callahan Post 97.
“The American Legion exists to serve veterans, and the location on West Locust has been providing a place for its members to gather since 1968,” said Mike Russell, 37-year AL member and current post commander. An honor-system bar is available there, with beer, soda and snacks, that only members can access.
A visible sign of Post 97 appears on Clay Avenue several times a year: that’s when members put up American flags to honor military veterans on holidays like Memorial Day and Veterans Day, according to Charlie Harper, post treasurer and adjutant general. Long rows of flags along Plattsburg’s main thoroughfare is a moving sight, a subtle encouragement to thank a veteran or active service member.
Also, the post runs a hotdog fundraiser at the city’s annual Fall Festival, and members use this opportunity to explain the American Legion’s mission to interested people.
Meetings for Post 97, which comprises about 50 active and inactive members, are monthly. They are held on the first Wednesday of the month, said Mr. Russell, “usually at 6 p.m., but sometimes we change the time. Check with Charlie to make sure.”
All veterans in the area—Plattsburg, Trimble, Stewartsville, Lathrop, etc.—are invited to join the American Legion and become part of Post 97. For more information, contact Charlie Harper at 816.592.1388 or email him at charper1@centurylink.net.
